Biography
Gabriele D'Annunzio, in the civil state Gabriele d'Annunzio (Pescara, 12 March 1863 - Gardone Riviera, 1 March 1938), was an Italian writer, poet, playwright, military, politician, journalist and patriot, symbol of decadentism and famous figure of the First World War, from 1924 awarded by King Vittorio Emanuele III with the title of "prince of Montenevoso".
Nicknamed "il Vate" (in the same way as Giosuè Carducci), that is "sacred poet, prophet", cantor of Umbertine Italy, or even "the Imaginificus", he occupied a prominent position in Italian literature from about 1889 to 1910 and in political life from 1914 to 1924.
He has been defined as "exceptional and last interpreter of the most enduring Italian poetic tradition. As a political figure he left a mark in his time and is considered an important precursor and inspirer of Italian fascism.
His art was so crucial to mass culture, that it influenced customs and traditions in Italy - and not only - of his time: a period that would later be defined precisely "D'Annunzio".
